The Olympic Flame has just been ignited, during the traditional Lighting Ceremony in the Panatheneic Stadium in Athens. Rays of sun ignited the fire. The flame was handed over by the Greek hosts and is now on its way to the Netherlands. It’s expected to land at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport at 20:00 o’clock.
A delegation of EYOF Utrecht 2013 and the Netherlands Olympic Committee NOC*NSF, consisting of chair Rinda den Besten, CEO Henny Smorenburg and NOC*NSF secretary general Gerard Dielessen, was present at the ceremony. The Flame was handed to them by the chairman of the Hellenic Olympic Committee mr. Spyros Capralos.
Rinda den Besten offered the Greek host a gift from Utrecht: a handmade candle in the shape of the city’s iconic Dom Tower. This way the “Olympic symbol and the symbol of Utrecht can be united”. She thanked for the honour that the Flame will be returning to the Netherlands for an Olympic event for the first time since 1928. It was in that year in Amsterdam that the tradition of the Olympic Flame in the modern era started.
Also present at the ceremony was the Dutch ambassador to Greece mr. Jan Versteeg, together with some of the embassy staff.
